ECBAWM Files Federal Civil Rights Lawsuit Alleging NYPD Officers Beat Father Unconscious After He Sought Information About His Daughter
- July 2, 2026
Emery Celli Brinckerhoff Abady Ward & Maazel LLP filed a federal civil rights lawsuit on behalf of Leon Jones, who alleges that NYPD officers beat him unconscious, denied him prompt medical care, and falsely arrested him after he approached officers to check on the welfare of his daughter following her arrest at a Fourth of July gathering in Queens.
The lawsuit asserts claims under federal, state, and New York City law, including excessive force, false arrest, malicious prosecution, denial of medical care, assault and battery, and related civil rights violations.
“Instead of helping me find out what was happening to my daughter, NYPD officers beat me unconscious,” said Leon Jones. “I was bleeding, I collapsed, and I kept asking for help. No one should be treated that way. I’m bringing this lawsuit to hold those responsible accountable and to help ensure that no other family has to endure what mine did.”
“This case is about a father who was met with violence instead of answers when he tried to check on his daughter’s safety,” said Laura Kokotailo of Emery Celli Brinckerhoff Abady Ward & Maazel LLP. “Mr. Jones was beaten unconscious and then treated as a criminal rather than a victim. The officers’ violence was entirely gratuitous. The conduct described in this lawsuit is deeply disturbing and reflects a profound disregard for the constitutional rights and human dignity of the people officers are sworn to protect.”
ECBAWM attorneys Richard Emery, Laura Kokotailo, Sara Estela, and paralegal Toby Shore represent Leon Jones.
