Carlos Martínez-Montes

Carlos joined ECBAWM in 2023 as a paralegal. Prior to joining the Firm, Carlos worked as a paralegal at The Legal Aid Society’s Criminal Appeals Bureau, New York City’s largest provider of legal services to low-income people, where he gathered and analyzed discovery materials for clients challenging their criminal convictions on direct appeal and in post-conviction proceedings. In 2020 and 2021, Carlos also interned at the Washington D.C. civil rights organization, Civil Rights Corps, where he zealously advocated for Spanish-speaking clients inside Prince George’s County Jail in Maryland and compiled robust evidence for class action lawsuits challenging the money bail system in Harris County, Texas and Alamance County, North Carolina.

Carlos graduated in 2022 from CUNY Baruch College with a pre-law History Major. He studied the repressive socioeconomic mechanisms that contrived the American Carceral State, working alongside community organizers and political prisoners.

In July 2023, Carlos was recognized in the American Law Media for his outstanding class member outreach work in the NYC Bail Settlement case, Jones v. City of New York, which resulted in at least $143 million for people whose post-bail release was delayed by the New York City Department of Corrections. The class member claim response rate exceeded the City’s expectations by almost double, a number U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of New York John G. Koetl called “stunning.”

Carlos is also a leading scorer in the New York Lawyers Basketball League.
