ECBAWM Files Suit Against Westchester County Jail and Wellpath Care Following 22-Year-Old’s Tragic Death by Suicide

  • January 18, 2024

On January 16, 2024, ECBAWM filed a lawsuit on behalf of Liza Pizzaro, the mother of 22-year-old Daruis Pizarro, about the failure of the Westchester County Jail to provide basic mental health care to her son while he was in its custody. The lawsuit alleges that Westchester County Jail, its mental health provider, and two clinicians were grossly indifferent to Daruis’s severe mental health crisis and his mental health care, leading to his death by suicide on October 22, 2022.

Ms. Pizarro stated, “There was red flags, they ignored everything . . . Nobody should have to go through that. No mother should get a phone call like that. It could have been prevented.”

ECBAWM attorneys Katherine Rosenfeld and Ariadne Motta Ellsworth represent Daruis’s mother, Liza Pizarro, and Carlos Martínez-Montes is the paralegal.
