ECBAWM Files Disability Discrimination Suit against NYC Developer Chess Builders LLC

  • December 21, 2023

ECBAWM attorneys filed a lawsuit today on behalf of the Fair Housing Justice Center (FHJC) against New York developer Chess Builders, and the owners and architects of three rental buildings in Brooklyn and the Bronx that were designed and constructed without essential features in apartments and common areas to make them accessible for people with disabilities.  One of the buildings, The Arches, is a 400+ unit mixed income complex in the Bronx; Chess Builders allegedly received public benefits and subsidies to include low- and moderate-income units at the site.  FHJC alleges the buildings were designed and constructed by Defendants in violation of the federal Fair Housing Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and New York State and New York City Human Rights Laws, which prohibit disability discrimination.

The named Defendants are Chess Builders LLC; 2237 Bedford LLC; Otts Ocean LLC; Deegan 135 Realty LLC; S. Wieder Architect P.C.; and Fischer+Makooi Architects PLLC.
