City to pay $12m to ECBAWM client following police shooting

  • September 6, 2024

As announced on September 2, 2024, New York City has agreed to pay $12 million to Peyman Bahadoran, who was paralyzed in a June 2020 police shooting in Manhattan’s East Village.

Mr. Bahadoran, in the midst of a mental health crisis, walked with his dog into a bodega and waved a knife while in the bodega. He left the knife in the bodega and walked out, carrying only a water bottle. While outside, he was confronted by several police officers, two of whom for no justifiable reason shot Mr. Bahadoran, leaving him paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. He is unable to work and is forever damaged both physically and mentally. In a quote to the NY Daily News, ECBAWM partner Earl Ward said “It’s a very difficult and hard life. He suffers every day as a result of what happened to him.”

The city tried to have the lawsuit dismissed but Federal Judge Jesse Furman denied their motion in November 2023, saying “It is undisputed that he was unarmed at the time of the shooting.” Both officers remain with the NYPD, with one having since been promoted.

ECBAWM is proud to have secured this historic settlement for their client to sustain his continuing medical care and quality of life.

Mr. Bahadoran is represented by partners Jonathan Abady and Earl Ward, as well as associate Nick Bourland.
