ECBAWM Wins Motion to Intervene and Files Housing Discrimination Complaint Against New York Landlord
- May 29, 2025
On May 23, 2025, the Hon. Marissa Soto, Justice in the Bronx County Supreme Court, granted a motion to intervene filed by ECBAWM Attorneys, on behalf of client Alecia Compass. ECBAWM thereafter filed a complaint against Defendant Kujtim Ndreu, a landlord in New York, for discrimination on the basis of Ms. Compass’s source of income.
The judge stated there was good cause for Ms. Compass’s intervention, which had been initiated by the New York State Division of Human Rights. In March 2022, Ms. Compass was denied housing by Mr. Ndreu, who stated that he did not accept rental applications from prospective tenants with housing vouchers, blatantly violating source of income anti-discrimination law. Discriminatory conduct like Defendant Ndreu’s contributes to increasing rates of homelessness and makes housing unavailable to the very households rent assistance programs are created to help.
Ms. Compass seeks an order requiring the Defendant to comply with New York State Human Rights Laws, as well as compensation for the discrimination and resulting harms she suffered.
Ms. Compass is represented by ECBAWM Partner Diane L. Houk and Associate Eric Abrams.
