ECBAWM Files Religious Rights Suit Against Suffolk County
- January 17, 2024
On January 8, 2024, ECBAWM filed a lawsuit on behalf of Marowa Fahmy against Suffolk County for removing and retaining her hijab for over nine hours and taking her uncovered photograph in police custody. This suit also challenges Suffolk County’s policy of removing religious head coverings for booking photos in violation of federal and constitutional law and builds upon ECBAWM’s work challenging similar police policy in New York City and Yonkers.
ECBAWM attorneys O. Andrew Wilson and Sana Mayat represent Ms. Fahmy, along with Lamya Agarwala and Burhan Carroll from the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR)-New York.
