Emery Celli Brinckerhoff Abady Ward & Maazel LLP (www.ecbawm.com) is seeking to immediately hire a Controller. Currently thirty-one lawyers, the firm is a litigation boutique with a diverse mix of cases in both civil rights and complex commercial litigation. Our civil rights practice focuses on police misconduct, First Amendment rights, election law, employment and housing discrimination, prisoners’ rights, education law, and class action litigation. The firm’s commercial litigation practice serves a broad range of clients, from publicly traded corporations to individuals to small businesses.

ECBAWM seeks to hire an experienced financial professional to assume the role of Controller. In this newly created position, you will have tremendous exposure and report to the Partner in charge of Finance as well as a dotted line report to the co-Managing Partners. We are looking for someone who will grow with us and provide more sophisticated professional financial support for the firm.

The salary for this position is expected to be between $120,000 and $170,000 per year. The successful candidate will be eligible to receive an annual, discretionary bonus and to take part in the firm’s generous benefits program, which includes comprehensive health insurance at no cost to the employee, options for dental and vision insurance, 401(k) profit sharing, and a monthly MetroCard. PRIMARY DUTIES:

You will be responsible for the firm’s accounting functions, including the following:

  • Maintain and update the General Ledger as well as the time and billing system.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports for Partners.
  • Prepare interim financial reports and statements as needed.
  • Prepare annual financial analyses and projections, including budget and profitability analyses.
  • Assist with periodic tax filings, including NYC Commercial Rent Tax and NYS Sales Tax.
  • Calculate compensation for contract attorneys and develop compensation models for consideration as contract attorneys join the firm.
  • Monitor expenses.
  • Oversee the preparation of monthly bills.
  • Perform banking functions, including bank account reconciliation and wire transfers.
  • Work with the firm’s outside CPA as needed, including assisting with the preparation of the Firm’s annual income tax returns and year-end financial statements.
  • Assist the firm in both maintaining its current accounting software as well as be a key member of the transition team, if the firm decides to transition to a different financial software.

REQUIREMENTS:

In order to be considered for this role, you must have:

  • A minimum of seven years of law firm accounting experience and a Bachelor Degree (preferably in accounting). (An advanced degree is a plus.)
  • Knowledge of, and experience working with, cash and accrual basis accounting.
  • An understanding of financial considerations as well as financial software requirements of a firm that engages in a hybrid of hourly and contingency work.
  • A high degree of technical skills, including advanced MS Excel.
  • Knowledge of more than one law firm accounting software is a plus.
